Robert Shaw

Dr Robert Shaw is a Senior Lecturer in geography at Newcastle University. He was awarded his PhD in geography at Durham University in 2012 for a project exploring the role of non-drinking practices such as in producing the spaces of urban nightlife. Since his PhD he has researched and written on a range of projects relating to the night time, including nocturnal protest movements, the domestic night, the experiences of street-lighting technology transitions both in the past and future, and night-time street cleaning. Much of this work was summarized in his 2018 book The Nocturnal City (Routeldge), in which he located work on the urban night within the broader field of urban studies. Dr Shaw is currently the Degree Programme Director for geography at Newcastle University, and is developing projects to explore recent shifts in night-time working trends across Europe.
